ACESA Collaboration Space: Chemistry

Attention: Cambridge Chemistry Teachers Teaching AS Level and A level 9701 Chemistry can feel isolating especially if you are new to teaching the subject. Although the syllabus document is comprehensive in outlining the content, it is difficult to gauge the level of depth of knowledge required. It is also a skill to know the level required when marking. Some concepts are specific to Cambridge and are taught differently in other syllabi or levels. The practicals are especially difficult to navigate even for more experienced teachers. There are very few resources available to guide teachers in these practicals. Although a general guide is given by Cambridge for laboratory set-up, it is not easy to develop the optimal model. It can be difficult to source chemicals, especially for exams. Practicals may not work for several reasons, and it is not easy to isolate the source of the problem, as was experienced in the most recent exam series. It has taken many years of experience, doing practicals, completing Cambridge courses and getting back marked scripts from Cambridge to learn what is expected. This knowledge needs to be constantly updated and adapted as Cambridge develops new ways of varying practicals and using different chemicals. It would be helpful if a forum could be created for the 9701 chemistry teachers in South Africa to communicate. This could be a space for teachers to pose questions and ask advice. It could be beneficial when sourcing chemicals for exams and discussing problems experienced. If you are interested in joining this forum, please email Dr Kate Akerman (kakerman@scc.co.za) and she will add you. We look forward to growing this community.
